Ed Krynski

Eddie (Ed) Krynski est un concepteur de flipper, né en 1927 et mort le 16 novembre 2004.

Il est à l'origine d'innovations techniques telles que les blocs de cibles tombantes, les cibles variables et rotatives, et les couloirs intérieurs.

Eddie est le designer le plus prolifique de tous les temps (220 flippers réalisés environ).[1].

1 Carrière

E. Krynski fait ses débuts en 1956 dans l'entreprise Keeney basée à Chicago. Cette entreprise produit des machines à sous et des bingos. [2]

Dragon (1978)

Au début des années 1960, les lois américaines concernant les jeux de hasard se durcissent . L'entreprise Keeney est inquiétée par la justice. Ed Krynski se retrouve contraint de témoigner devant les tribunaux au sujet de son employeur. [2] Suite à cette mésaventure, le designer rejoint Gottlieb, une entreprise qui ne produit pas de jeu illégaux.

Chez Gottlieb, Ed Krynski récupère le poste de Wayne Neyens qui vient d'être promu responsable du département de conception. [3]

En juillet 1965, Eddie réalise son premier flipper Gottlieb, le "Dodge City".

En 1971, il collabore pour la première fois avec l'illustrateur Gordon Morison sur le flipper "2001". La rencontre de ces deux talents va engendrer une série de flippers mémorables ("Galaxie", "Drop-a-Card", "El Dorado", "High Hand", "Top Card", "Atlantis", "Sky Jump", "Royal Flush", "Genie", "The incredible Hulk", "Dragon", "Flying Carpet", "Circus" et "Counterforce"). [4] Ces flippers signés Krynski/Morison sont esthétiquement très réussis et proposent une expérience de jeu inédite. Ils contribuent à faire de Gottlieb le leader de l'industrie durant les années 1970.

La collaboration entre les deux hommes dure 10 ans. Le binôme réalise 125 flippers pendant cette période.

Ed Krynski a apporté plusieurs innovations techniques au flipper :

  • les couloirs intérieurs (inlanes, ou return-lanes) apparues sur le flipper Bank-a-Ball (1965),
  • les cibles rotatives en forme de Carrousel (Carousel roto-targets) vues pour la première fois sur le Dancing Lady (1966),
  • les cibles variables (vari-targets) apparues sur le flipper Airport (1969),
  • les blocs de cibles tombantes (Drop target bank) vues pour la première fois sur le flipper 2001 (1971).

En 1984, E. Krynski quitte l'industrie du flipper sur une note amère. Son entreprise Gottlieb venait d'être rachetée par le groupe Columbia, et l'ambiance de travail n'était plus la même. Il ne s'agissait plus de faire des jeux de qualité, mais d'être le plus rentable possible.[1]

Ed Krynski est décédé le 16 novembre 2004, à l'âge de 77 ans.
